Freestyle America is proud to announce two new on-snow summer training programs:

Whistler Freeski Camp: July 7-14.

Whistler Mogul/Freeski Combined Training Camp: June 29-July 14

Freestyle America has re-established a freeski camp option in Whistler, with the Momentum slope features and half-pipe as our training venue. Whereas our Mount Hood camp, with limited space, fills with our Junior and Senior WVA and Rev Tour level skiers, the Whistler Freeski Camp is open to all ages and abilities. This Whistler Freeski Camp features a coaching program focusing on development level slopestyle and half-pipe training and will operate in consort with the Whistler Mogul Program sharing accommodations, meals, and activities at the beautiful Lorimer Ridge Lodge. The household serves us well as camp central where the coaches, house manager Suzi Preston, and the athletes reside together. Also where the video and training activities occur, social life is safe friendly, and supervision is well managed.

The Whistler Mogul and Freeskiing Combined Training Program is the hybrid of the Mogul Camp and Freeski Camp, where combined skiers simply switch focus to slope and pipe as the freeski program commences on July 8th. To compare the 3 coaching programs check out our main Whistler Camp Page.

I’m pleased to announce the staff for the Whistler Freestyle Camps. Our mogul coaches include myself (Nick Preston), and Eric Cole (WVA coach), Brittany Loweree (US Team skier), and US Champ Bronze medalist Reed Snyderman. The freeskiing program will feature Waterville coach, Robbie Dresser, and special guest Marshall LaCroix, former Dew Tour Pro, .

Enjoy the best in summer snow freestyle training. Your options are moguls, freeskiing, or both. Elevate your skills, be a more advanced skier by the time winter starts. Join us in Whistler for the best in freestyle training programs.

To all Freestyle America Athletes and Families-

First, Wes, Shuff, and I want to thank you all for the dedication and hard work you put into your training this summer. I’m sure you are pleased with the skills you have acquired as you head toward winter.

You are now likely back in school, pursuing your academics and school sports. We encourage you to apply yourselves well, and to keep preparing for your ski season as best you can.

On that note, coaches Wes Preston, Dan Shuffleton, and I encourage your return to trampoline and water ramp acivities this Fall. The Trampoline Center here at Mountain Fare Inn in Campton will be open for training beginning Labor Day weekend and continue though each October weekend. Remember, trampoline activities are the best environment for developing and practicing flipping and twisting skills in preparation for skis and snow.

For those of you looking to complete your ramping goals and qualifications, Wes, Shuff, and I head back to Lake Placid, lodging at Lysek’s Inn, on the Sept 9-11 and Sept.16-18 weekend. These shall be our final Ramp Camps for 2011. For details and enrollment information, click on the camp specific links on the right hand side of our home page.

The tramps and water ramps await us. Hope you can join us.

Not to scare you, but the widely accepted Outliers principle for success in any activity, not just sports, calls for 10,000 hours of learning and practice. Assuming Freestyle America athletes are seeking a mastery of sorts, let’s do a bit of math.

A 10 year old would like to be a masterful half pipe skier, determined to make the 2022 Olympics. The 10 year old, having just finished War and Peace reads Outliers and plans out her 10,000 hours. Well, over 10 years that’s 1,000 hours of training per year or fifty 40 hour weeks per year, Yikes! Sounds like a full time job. Better line up a few sponsors, and Mom and Dad better be sick at home-schooling, or better yet, high tail off to a ski academy at the age of 10! Isn’t math fun!

The “off-season” for snow and competition is the “on-season” for advancing your skill level. The ideal training model for snow acrobatics is fundamental tumbling and trampoline for learning the skill, water ramping or use of a bag jump to apply the skill to skiing, then moving the “qualified” skill to snow.

The winter competition season is short and intense affording little time to learn new skills. That’s where off-season Spring/Summer/Fall training plays a critical role. Determine how to address each training format to learn the maneuvers you have as goals for next winter. Then plan to spend plenty of time with the skill in the pure acrobatic environments of tumbling and trampoline, say 1-2 weeks. The WVBBTS Phil’s Hill BagJump Training Center shall provide the ample opportunity throughout the summer and fall for you to advance your aerial skills and degree of difficulty.
